The California Self Storage Association (CSSA) has selected attorney Randy Pollack to act as its lobbyist with state legislators next year. Although CSSA has not finalized its 2013 legislative agenda, self-storage lien laws, taxes and public-notification requirements remain key issues, officials said.
"The 2013 legislative session will have over 40 new members (out of 120) taking office. 2013 is an important year, as term limits have changed and members can now serve a total of 12 years in either or a combination of both houses of the legislature, Pollack said. One of our first priorities will be meeting with all new members and educating them about the self-storage industry, how they [self-storage facilities] operate, and the important role they play in our communities.
CSSA will likely finalize its legislative agenda in January or February, Pollack said. "We will be providing updates to the membership and developing a grassroots action plan, where members will once again be asked to help our legislative efforts through writing and meeting with their local legislators, he said.
Pollack attended McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific and has worked in government in several capacities, including chief deputy for legal affairs under former Gov. George Deukmejian. He left government for private practice in 1997 and started his own law firm in 2006. There he represented several state and national trade associations in front of the legislature and executive-branch agencies.
CSSA is a nonprofit trade association dedicated to supporting the self-storage industry in California. The group offers educational events, networking opportunities, legislative advocacy and more.
