A self-storage tenant is facing a murder charge after shooting and killing an alleged burglar on Monday at AAA Stow-A-Way Storage in Paducah, Ky. Jeffrey Conrad, 49, of Benton, Ky., was arrested on Tuesday by the McCracken County Sheriff's Department after a grand jury indicted him on a count of capital murder, according to the source.
Conrad told deputies he arrived at the storage facility at 270 Eagles Nest Drive to find two men with a Ford Ranger truck allegedly stealing property from his storage unit. The bed of the pickup contained items from the unit he rented, Conrad later told police. Conrad confronted the men, Garlon Casey Cox, 30, and Brandon York, 36, with a .45 caliber pistol and told them not to move, according to the source.
When York ran, the pistol went off and struck Cox, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of the truck, in the head, according to the sheriff’s office. The pickup then crashed into a storage unit. Cox, also of Benton, was pronounced dead at Lourdes Hospital on Monday morning, the source reported.
York was arrested later that day and charged with third-degree burglary as well as possession of burglary tools, drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine. He’s being held at the McCracken County Jail.
AAA Stow-A-Way Storage operates 35 self-storage facilities in Metropolis, Ill., and Boaz, Kevil, Lone Oak, Mayfield, Paducah and Reidland, Ky.
