The former self-storage manager of Abingdon Mini Warehouses Inc. in Abingdon, Va., has been arrested for felony embezzlement on allegations that she took $34,000 from the business over a three-year period.
Doris Faye Reynolds, 58, was arrested Thursday by Washington County, Va., sheriffs. Office detective James Blevins told the source Reynolds is believed to have been keeping certain rental payments from customers, beginning in January 2008 and ending in June 2011, when she was fired. The investigation was prompted by an internal audit, where auditors discovered the facility had several tenants without written leases.
Though embezzlement charges in Virginia are based on six-month periods of time, the nature of the recordkeeping in this case makes it difficult to ascertain exactly how long the alleged crime may have been ongoing, Blevins said. Therefore, Reynolds received only a single charge. She does not have a criminal record, aside from traffic violations.
Reynolds was released on a $2,000 secured bond and will appear in Washington County General District Court on June 20.
Abingdon Mini Warehouse is located on U.S. Route 11 in Abingdon, not far from Interstate 81.
