A man wanted on a felony warrant for allegedly attacking and injuring his girlfriend with a machete barricaded himself in a Healdsburg, Calif., self-storage unit on Aug. 31 for 12 hours before police were able to take him into custody. Officer Frank Patane approached Robert Osuna, 46, around 9:20 p.m. at Empire Mini Storage at 1200 Grove St., according to Sgt. Luis Rodriguez. The man retreated into the unit and threatened to use the tools he stored as weapons, Rodriguez said.
After asking police to shoot him, Osuna closed the unit door and barricaded it. A member of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office negotiations team was called to communicate with Osuna, who refused to surrender, according to Rodriguez.
Police waited outside the unit overnight and were able to get Osuna to consider leaving around 9:45 a.m., but only if officers agreed to shoot him, the source reported. Police then set off a pepper-spray fogger inside the unit, forcing Osuna to emerge. He was taken into custody on the assault warrant and suspicion of obstructing and delaying police, Rodriguez said.
