The owner of Ceres Self Storage in Ceres, Calif., scuffled with two men he caught in the act of burgling two units at his facility on Feb. 17. The thieves snuck into the facility at 2105 Fairview Drive around 5:30 p.m. in a white pickup through a side gate the owner had left open in anticipation of a delivery, according to police.
The men burglarized one unit by cutting the lock and were accessing a second unit, which contained tools belonging to the storage owner, when they were discovered, police said. The owner confronted the men and a fight broke out, according to Ceres Police Department Spokesman Lt. Chris Perry.
The thieves then jumped into the truck and attempted to flee, but the owner grabbed the passenger door and told the driver to stop, causing a temporary halt. The owner then walked to the front of the vehicle to view the license plate number, police said.
At that point, the driver made a U-turn, and the owner reached into the bed of the truck and pulled out a child’s car seat that had been stolen from the first unit. One of the thieves exited the vehicle and fought the owner to retrieve the item. The owner hit the burglar a few times with the car seat until the man got back into the truck and both men fled.
The property’s security video caught the theft, and police are working to identify the suspects, who are described as Hispanic. If apprehended, they face burglary charges, Perry told the source.
