Tennessee Self Storage Association Partners With FindSelfStorageAuctions.com

Article-Tennessee Self Storage Association Partners With FindSelfStorageAuctions.com

The Tennessee Self Storage Association (TNSSA) has become the first state association to partner with FindSelfStorageAuctions.com, a free public service that assists people in finding self-storage auctions nationwide. By joining with this online auction directory, TNSSA has provided its member self-storage operators another way to publicize their lien sales.

Our board immediately saw the value of this partnership and the benefits it would bring to our members, said TNSSA President Dee Wiseman Sharp. FindSelfStorageAuctions provides our owners an additional, and very affordable, venue to advertise their lien sales. This partnership will allow TNSSA to be the official source of auction listings in Tennessee.

Free to public search, the website generally assesses a charge to self-storage operators for posting auction listings. While any self-storage operator in Tennessee can list his auctions on the website, TNSSA members will receive a substantial discount, Sharp said.

The website was launched in 2009 by Richard Marmor and James Appleton, both executive members of the Arizona Self Storage Association. It allows users to search for self-storage auctions based on parameters such as date/time, state, city, ZIP code, facility name, number of units being auctioned, unit contents and even auctioneer.

Self-Storage Talk Members: Maximize Your Expo Experience

Article-Self-Storage Talk Members: Maximize Your Expo Experience

Final preparations have begun for next week's Inside Self-Storage World Expo at the Paris Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas, and like you, I'm rife with anticipation for a little bit of desert warmth and the bright lights of The Strip. But before we all pack our bags for good times and good learning in Sin City, let me remind you of a few ways you can use Self-Storage Talk, the industry's largest online community, before, during and after the expo.

First of all, discussions about expo education sessions are occurring in the "Inside Self-Storage World Expo Las Vegas 2011" sub-forum. If you would like to shape speakers' presentations before the show, this area is an excellent place to start asking your questions now. This is also the right spot to start your pre-show networking. Arrange meet-ups and dinners, let fellow attendees know you'll be there, and announce your plans for the three-day event. Have any practical questions about transportation, scheduling, the hotel or some other facet of the show? Ask them here.

This area will also host running discussions of the show during Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Post your reactions to presentations and events as they're happening, and ask questions as they arise. This sub-forum will also be the designated area for show feedback and redux: what you liked, what you didn't like, what you didn't get to ask, new ideas you have, etc.

Self-Storage Talk members are encouraged to do three things at the expo. First, when you register, grab an SST member ribbon and attach it to your badge. It will be very helpful for getting to know each other and spreading awareness of the community. Second, during exhibit-hall hours come say hello at the SST Booth. I'll be there and would love the chance to meet you in person or catch up if we've met before. Finally, attend the cocktail reception on Tuesday evening, and when you walk in, look for a cordoned-off collection of tables. This is the designated "members only" area for SST members to meet, socialize, and enjoy some exquisite beverages and hors d'oeuvres. With an SST member badge, you're more than welcome to enjoy this VIP section.

Twitter users, take note: The expo has an official hashtag#ISSLV. When posting about the expo, try to squeeze #ISSLV into your 140 characters. Discussions are already starting in this medium about the show. Type "isslv" into the Twitter search function to see what's already been said. If you're not already, start following Inside Self-Storage, @selfstoragemag, become a fan on Facebook, or connect on LinkedIn.

If after reading about all of this you're still unsure what all of the fuss is about, head over to SelfStorageTalk.com, and check out the forum. To post, you must become a registered user, but it's free to join and the registration process is easy. I hope to see you on the forum and in less than a week in Vegas.

National and Florida Self Storage Associations Meet With Legislators on Lien Law

Article-National and Florida Self Storage Associations Meet With Legislators on Lien Law

This week representatives from the national Self Storage Association and the Florida Self Storage Association will meet with legislators to discuss House Bill 459 and Senate Bill 1772, pieces of legislation that propose improvements to the states self-storage lien law. The associations will answer questions about the proposed changes to the House Civil Justice Subcommittee. They will also provide testimony on the laws at a hearing in Tallahassee, Fla., on Wednesday.

The associations aim to save Floridas self-storage operators money by updating the mail-notification and newspaper-publishing requirements surrounding industry lien sales. HB 459 revises the notice requirements relating to lien enforcement and addresses limitations on liability. SB 1772 also revises notice requirements, allowing postal notice by First Class Mail with a certificate of mailing as well as e-mail notification. It also deletes provisions relating to advertisement requirements and clarifies provisions relating to the right to create contractual liens or limitations on liability.

HB 459 (www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2011/0459), sponsored by Rep. Matthew Caldwell (R), was referred to Committee on Feb. 7. SB 1772 (www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2011/1772), sponsored by Sen. Alan Hays (R), was filed with the Senate on March 4.

The SSA and FSSA attempted to introduce legislation that would improve the self-storage lien law last spring, but the larger bill to which the proposed measure was added was removed in the House Rules Committee before a vote was taken.

Florida has more than 2,500 self-storage facilities statewide. The FSSA is running a Capital for the Capitol donation drive to raise money for its legislative action team. With a goal of $60,000, the campaign was kicked off with a $15,000 donation from the SSA.  SSA will also match any FSSA member contributions dollar for dollar. Donations can be made at www.floridassa.org/donate.asp.
